Home By Toni Morrison ~ an Inspired By Reading Book Club post

Sometimes I wonder why Andrew lets me stay in “the club”.
I don’t think I’ve met a deadline yet.

The Club is the Inspired By Reading Book Club, the brain child of Andrew Thornton, owner of Allegory Gallery in Ligonier, PA.  Each month we read a book, create and blog. This month our book was Home, by Toni Morrison.
It’s the story of a young black man reclaiming his life after returning from the Korean War.

The San Francisco Chronicle said the book “Brims with affection and optimism.” Perhaps I missed much of the symbolism, but I found it to be somewhat dark and depressing. Because of that, I had a difficult time deciding on a project.

At the very beginning of the story, Frank Money and his younger sister sneaked into a crawl space to watch two horses in an overgrown field.  One was rust colored and the other deep black.

My design idea was very literal – I had planned to use a Green Girl horse pendant with black onyx and carnelian.  The horse looked too rustic and out of place with my faceted onyx so I ended up with two necklaces.

I removed the horse, added a black onyx nugget as a focal piece and highlighted with sterling silver bead caps and daisies, and shiny copper nuggets.

Then - I hung the horse with a hammered silver ring from a silver chain. (I mass produce the rings so I always have a few in stock.) I wire wrapped more of those shiny copper nuggets to the chain for texture and interest.

Please go to Andrew's Blog to learn more about the book and check out the other talented members of the group.

  1. It doesn't matter that you may be late, because you always come through with amazing pieces! I love the horse necklace, great idea to take apart and reconnect chain with hand made wire wrapped beads! Love it!

  2. I love seeing what resonates with people from a book, especially one like Home that had so many dark images. I agree you did right by changing your design because both necklaces ended up great. I love that horse!

  3. Wait a second, there's a deadline????? Lol.
Andrew always says that as long as you read the book and it inspires you to make something that the timing doesn't matter! I've missed a few deadlines lately due to our move BUT he's going to post a catch up. So snap some pics of your late creations and submit them!!!!
    These two are GREAT!

  5. The book club is supposed to be fun and the deadlines are sort of imaginary, so fret not! We always look forward to seeing what you'll create and hear about what inspired you. Both of the pieces that you created are really lovely! The black and carnelian piece has a very vintage-vibe and reminds me of necklaces made in the time period of the book! Very classy, yo! And the horse on the chain is simply perfection! I love how impactful it is, even though it's clean and not overly fussy. Great job and thank you so much for participating! It really means a lot to me!

  6. We really have been in sync for book club creation ideas lately! I really like both necklaces but especially the one with the horse pendant. Understated and elegant! I also agree with you that the description "brims with affection and optimism" waaay overstates things.

  7. You are not late to me as I am just finding time to do the blog hop. It is funny how we see something in our head sometimes and when we put it together it seems a little off. But by removing the horse, you ended up with a classic necklace. Plus I really like the piece you ended up putting with the horse.
